Out of the start and heading down the first furlong

July 31, 2015

It's been an interesting month as business newbie. I've spent a lot of time marketing myself in various ways, some more successful than others. Website, emails and phone calls have produced some work already,Face to face networking has got my name out there followed by lots of interest on Linked In and Twitter. Biggest disappointment so far has been my business's Facebook page.Actually spent some money on that but with very little useful response.Have to say didn't much like the user experience with Facebook, very confusing and easy to leave something out.

I really enjoyed last Friday's Trowbridge Business Expo, free to attend with some entertaining - a spot of juggling included - and useful speakers. I listened to  Robert Craven and Alison Edgar and came away with ideas to develop and improve my business. Good to chat to people on the stands, some familiar faces, some new, swap business cards and ideas  and hopefully be of benefit to each other in the future. I would certainly encourage local businesses to support the Trowbridge Chamber of Commerce who organised the event.

Have now actually had my first couple of invoices paid, which is a very good feeling and got some other work booked. The balance sheet still looks a bit daunting and it may be a while before I feel comfortable with it. People tell me I'm impatient, I suppose it's my newspaper background,  work was always wanted 'yesterday' and very often your schedule of jobs changed by the hour, so you had to think on your feet a lot of the time. It certainly feels odd working at 'normal' speed.

By the way, the blog title is a nod to the late great racing commentator Peter O'Sullevan who sadly died this week. Bought back some good memories of watching the racing on TV on a Saturday afternoon with my grandad. Sadly grandad never did manage to explain to my nan how he managed to forget and leave a 6 year old me, standing outside a bookies for three hours while our fish and chip lunch got cold!
